Southern Nevada’s leading domestic violence organization, S.A.F.E. House, is marking 30 years of its emergency shelter, reflecting on decades of service to survivors across the Las Vegas Valley. Since opening its shelter in 1996, the organization has expanded its reach far beyond housing, offering advocacy, counseling, and long-term support to families in crisis.
Today, S.A.F.E. House continues to play a vital role in the community. Its mission remains clear: to stop abuse in the family environment while helping survivors rebuild their lives with dignity and stability.
From Modest Beginnings to a Lifeline for Thousands
S.A.F.E. House began with humble roots. In 1994, the organization operated out of a small 700-square-foot townhome with just 12 beds. However, the demand for services quickly grew. As a result, community leaders and donors stepped in to help expand the shelter.
By 1996, S.A.F.E. House opened a larger facility in Henderson. The new shelter offered 54 beds, along with counseling space and a resource boutique. Over time, the organization continued to evolve. In 2020, it increased capacity to 62 beds by converting existing space into additional sleeping areas.
Recently, the shelter completed a major renovation project. With support from the City of Henderson, upgrades improved bathrooms and replaced aging plumbing systems. These improvements ensure a safer and more comfortable environment for residents.
A Comprehensive Approach to Survivor Care
S.A.F.E. House provides more than emergency shelter. In fact, the organization offers a full range of services designed to meet survivors at every stage of recovery. These include housing assistance, legal advocacy, counseling, and community outreach.
Leaders emphasize a client-centered approach. Each survivor receives support tailored to their unique situation. For example, programs address barriers such as immigration concerns, pet care, and family reunification.
As a result, survivors gain more than safety. They gain the tools needed to rebuild their lives with confidence and independence.
Addressing a Critical Need in Nevada
Domestic violence remains a serious issue across Nevada. According to recent data, a significant portion of residents will experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime. Therefore, access to services like S.A.F.E. House remains essential.
In 2024 alone, thousands of victims across the state sought help. Many of those cases occurred in Clark County. These numbers highlight the ongoing need for shelters, advocacy, and prevention programs.
Since July 2025, S.A.F.E. House has already provided shelter to more than 170 individuals, including adults and children. In addition, the organization has delivered thousands of safe bed nights and critical support services.
A Lasting Community Impact
Over the years, S.A.F.E. House has built strong partnerships with local agencies, law enforcement, and community organizations. These collaborations strengthen its ability to respond quickly and effectively.
Each year, the organization serves hundreds of shelter residents and counseling clients. Meanwhile, advocacy teams handle hundreds of cases every month. This consistent support has helped thousands of families find safety and stability.
Importantly, S.A.F.E. House continues to adapt its programs. It uses survivor feedback and best practices to improve services and expand its impact.
Looking Ahead to the Future
As S.A.F.E. House celebrates its 30-year milestone, its leadership remains focused on the future. The organization plans to continue expanding services while maintaining its commitment to compassionate, trauma-informed care.
For many survivors, S.A.F.E. House represents hope during a critical moment. Looking ahead, that mission remains unchanged.
