Belt and Road Summit 2024: Hong Kong Leads Global Investment and Innovation in BRI Markets
Hong Kong is set to host the highly anticipated Belt and Road Summit on September 11-12, 2024, at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. This annual event, organized by the Hong Kong SAR Government and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), is a pivotal platform for fostering international business collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Over 80 officials and business leaders from around the world expected to attend, the Summit aims to explore new avenues for cooperation and investment in BRI markets.
Day One: Hong Kong’s Role in a Changing Global Landscape
The Summit kicks off with a Business Plenary featuring key business leaders from Hong Kong, Mainland China, and other global markets. This session will focus on how Hong Kong can continue to facilitate international cooperation amid a rapidly changing global landscape. Participants will discuss the city’s strategic role as a global hub for investment, trade, and innovation, with a particular emphasis on its ability to connect BRI markets.
Algernon Yau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development for the Hong Kong SAR Government, emphasized the importance of the event, stating, “The Belt and Road Summit will deepen international business cooperation and consolidate Hong Kong’s position as the preferred business platform for the Belt and Road Initiative.”
Day Two: Exploring Opportunities in the Middle East and Beyond
The second day of the Summit will shift focus to the Middle East and other key BRI markets. With these regions playing an increasingly vital role in the global economy, the discussions will highlight potential opportunities for collaboration and investment.
Dr. Peter K N Lam, Chairman of the HKTDC, underscored Hong Kong’s proactive role in fostering closer ties with BRI countries. He highlighted the HKTDC’s ongoing efforts, including business delegations and outreach activities, to support companies looking to expand into these markets.
A Focus on Sustainability: The Green Chapter
Reflecting the growing importance of sustainability in global business, this year’s Summit introduces a Green Chapter. Thematic sessions will cover a range of topics, including green construction, innovation, and finance, all aimed at promoting sustainable practices across BRI projects. The Finance Chapter will further explore how Hong Kong’s robust financial services sector can be leveraged to support green initiatives.
Youth and Connectivity: Shaping the Future of BRI
The Summit will also feature a Youth Chapter, where young business leaders will share their perspectives on emerging opportunities within the BRI framework. Additionally, new thematic sessions on multi-dimensional connectivity and people-to-people exchanges will address the importance of fostering cultural and technological connections across BRI markets.
Investment and Business Matching: Driving Collaboration
Investment and business matching services remain a cornerstone of the Belt and Road Summit. This year, the organizers anticipate over 800 one-to-one project matching meetings, with more than 280 investment projects expected to be matched. Key focus areas include energy, natural resources, public utilities, innovation and technology, urban development, and transport and logistics infrastructure.
Exhibition Zones: Showcasing Global Innovation and Investment Opportunities
The Summit’s exhibition will feature over 100 exhibitors across three dedicated zones. The Hong Kong Zone will highlight the city’s service providers, while the Global Investment Zone will showcase large-scale investment projects and opportunities. The InnoTech Zone will display cutting-edge innovations and solutions from global exhibitors, reinforcing the event’s theme of building a connected, innovative, and green Belt and Road.
As the Belt and Road Summit 2024 approaches, Hong Kong is poised to reaffirm its status as a key player in the global economy, driving forward investment, innovation, and sustainability across BRI markets.
