The Brightline West high-speed rail project, designed to connect Las Vegas to Rancho Cucamonga, continues to progress according to plan. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy recently reaffirmed that the project remains “on budget” and “on time,” despite the long wait for construction to commence. Southern Nevada residents have anticipated groundbreaking for months, and now, Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) officials suggest that work could finally begin in two months.
Construction Timeline and Financial Backing
In a mid-February NDOT Board of Directors meeting with Governor Joe Lombardo, officials indicated that Brightline is nearing the final stages of securing all required financing and wrapping up design. The project’s estimated cost stands at $12.5 billion, supported by multiple financial sources:
- A $3 billion federal grant
- $500 million in equity
- A $6 billion project finance bank loan
- Private activity bond sales
Brightline West must demonstrate financial capability before Nevada reimburses the company for federal funds. Once construction begins, it is expected to last four years, bringing a transformative transportation alternative to travelers between Las Vegas and Southern California.

U.S. Transportation Secretary’s Perspective
Secretary Duffy addressed the project during a press conference in Downtown Los Angeles. While scrutinizing the controversial rail project between Southern California and San Francisco, he spoke favorably about Brightline West.
“We’re not opposed to rail. I’m not opposed to high-speed rail. There are really great projects that we should invest in,” Duffy said. “The project from L.A. to Las Vegas appears to be going well. It appears to be on budget and on time. Those are the projects that I think taxpayers are willing to invest in.”
Despite these assurances, Duffy stated that his office would closely examine funding promises made by the previous administration. The project initially gained momentum in April 2023 when former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg attended a groundbreaking ceremony alongside congressional delegates. At the time, Brightline had projected a summer 2023 start date for construction. However, progress has been slower than anticipated.
Pre-Construction Work Nears Completion
Over the past several months, Brightline crews have conducted extensive pre-construction activities, including field investigations and geotechnical borings along the route from Las Vegas to Southern California. According to a Brightline spokesperson, this preparatory work in Southern Nevada is now 99% complete.

Anticipation for Groundbreaking
During the February 10 NDOT Board of Directors meeting, Governor Lombardo pressed officials for a concrete timeline on when physical construction would begin.
“So, do you have any idea or approximate time when the first shovel will go in the dirt?” Lombardo asked.
NDOT Senior Project Manager Eric Scheetz responded, “Honestly, my hope is within the next month or so we’ll hear answers on them assigning those contracts. I would suggest the next couple of months would be very good.”
If these projections hold, construction could begin as early as April or May 2025. Once completed, the Brightline West high-speed rail will revolutionize travel between Las Vegas and Southern California, offering a fast, eco-friendly alternative to congested highways.
Impact on Southern Nevada and Beyond
The Brightline West project aligns with broader transportation initiatives aimed at reducing traffic congestion and lowering carbon emissions. When operational, the train will significantly shorten travel times between Las Vegas and Southern California, benefiting both residents and tourists.
