Sainz Triumphs in Singapore, Marking Ferrari’s Resurgence on the F1 Circuit.
SINGAPORE — In a stunning display of tenacity and skill, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz conquered the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday, September 17, 2023, halting Max Verstappen of Red Bull’s series of ten straight victories this season.
“An incredible feeling, an incredible weekend, I want to thank everyone at Ferrari for managing to win after a tricky beginning,” beamed Sainz, who spearheaded the race from pole position. “We nailed the weekend, we nailed the race. We did everything we had to do and we did it perfect.”
The triumph marked Sainz’s inaugural victory of the 2023 season, setting a decisive end to Red Bull’s domineering streak that spanned all prior 14 races of the season. Following close behind Sainz in the heated race were McLaren’s Lando Norris and Mercedes’ superstar Lewis Hamilton, seizing second and third places, respectively.
A notable shift in the F1 landscape, this race marked the first occasion since the Brazilian Grand Prix last November that witnessed the absence of Red Bull racers on the celebrated podium. Verstappen, the recent record setter with his 10th straight victory at the Italian Grand Prix just weeks prior, faced a challenging race, ultimately securing a fifth-place finish from an 11th place start. Sergio Perez, Verstappen’s teammate, finished not far behind in eighth place.
Misfortune struck other racers as well. George Russell of Mercedes encountered disaster in his final lap while holding a promising third position, crashing into a barrier and foregoing his podium dreams. The race equally was not kind to Alpha Tauri’s Yuki Tsunoda, Alpine’s Esteban Ocon, and Alfa Romeo’s Valterri Bottas, all of whom could not see the race through to the end. Aston Martin was left without representation as Lance Stroll withdrew following a significant crash during Saturday’s qualifying session.
Crowds flooded the Singapore GP circuit from Friday to Sunday, with a remarkable 264,108 attendees according to official statements from the organizers, surpassing the initially forecasted figure of 250,000 attendees. This year witnessed the closure of The Bay Grandstand, a development that followed plans to revamp The Float at Marina Bay, reducing the audience capacity compared to the previous year.
Despite the reduced seats, the introduction of six new grandstands and extra walkabout tickets filled the void, selling out due to intense demand. The organizers highlighted the unwavering interest in the race event, with early bird tickets for the next year’s Grand Prix already sold out within a mere 72 hours of becoming available.
As Ferrari and Sainz bask in the glow of a well-deserved victory, the world of F1 now keenly sets its eyes on the unfolding drama of the 2023 season, where every race carves out the path to championship glory. The Singapore Grand Prix has not only etched Carlos Sainz’s name into the annals of racing history but signaled a potential shift in the tides of fortune as teams race towards the championship title with renewed vigor and hope.
