Celebrating Excellence: Laura “Jeanne” Penrod Named 2024 Nevada State Teacher of the Year

A Trailblazer in Education – Laura “Jeanne” Penrod’s Commitment Extends Beyond the Classroom, Leaving a Lasting Impact on Nevada’s Educational Landscape

In a heartfelt ceremony on Tuesday, county commissioners came together to honor the outstanding contributions of Laura “Jeanne” Penrod, who was recently named the 2024 Nevada State Teacher of the Year. The special proclamation recognized Penrod’s dedication to education and her significant impact on the community.

A Surprise Announcement

The journey to this prestigious recognition began in September when Governor Joe Lombardo and Clark County Superintendent Jesus Jara surprised Penrod with the news of her achievement. The surprise announcement marked a pivotal moment in Penrod’s illustrious career, which commenced in 2006.

Beyond the Classroom

Currently serving as an English teacher at the Southwest Career & Technical Academy, Penrod’s influence extends far beyond traditional teaching boundaries. County Commissioner Justin Jones praised her consistent advocacy for community connections and partnerships, singling out her collaboration with the Salvation Army, Title I Services, and Child Haven.

Penrod has actively engaged her students in creating youth care packages for those experiencing housing insecurity in southern Nevada. Her commitment to addressing the broader needs of the community sets her apart as a teacher who goes above and beyond the call of duty.

Leadership in Legislative Initiatives

Penrod’s impact is not confined to the classroom and community service alone. She has played a pivotal role in steering crucial assembly bills through the state legislature. Noteworthy among these are bills addressing financial literacy and college and career readiness, reflecting Penrod’s dedication to shaping well-rounded, informed citizens.

Expressing gratitude for Penrod’s service, Commissioner Justin Jones stated, “We’re so grateful for your service, and we are so happy for our 2024 Nevada State Teacher of the Year.”

An Honored Educator

In response to the recognition, Laura “Jeanne” Penrod shared her sentiments. “As someone who was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada, and went to Clark County School District, I’ve had a long depth of educators in my family,” said Penrod. “I continue to advocate with, always in mind, that the students are the most important in the room and how do we make things better for all of us so students don’t just survive, but thrive.”

Penrod’s journey from a dedicated educator to the Nevada State Teacher of the Year stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and community engagement. Her unwavering commitment to students and the broader community makes her a shining example of excellence in teaching.
