CHATEAUROUX, France — China Secures First Gold in 10-Meter Air Rifle Mixed Team Event
China claimed the first gold medal of the Paris 2024 Olympics in a thrilling competition held far from the bustling capital. The Olympic shooting range in Chateauroux, a three-hour drive from Paris, witnessed Huang Yuting and Sheng Lihao’s remarkable victory in the 10-meter air rifle mixed team event on Saturday morning.
Dominant Performance by Huang and Sheng
The Chinese duo of 17-year-old Huang Yuting and 19-year-old Sheng Lihao demonstrated exceptional skill and composure as they secured an early four-point lead against South Korea’s Keum Jihyeon and Park Hajun. Maintaining their advantage throughout the competition, Huang and Sheng triumphed with a final score of 16-12.
“My main feeling is just happiness. The match was quite hard, but being able to do a personal best performance helped a lot,” Sheng Lihao commented, reflecting on their hard-fought victory.
Celebrations and Historic Wins
Though their initial celebrations were subdued, Huang and Sheng shared smiles and a thumbs-up from Sheng on the podium, especially when bronze medalist Islam Satpayev took a selfie with his fellow medalists. This victory continues China’s success in the event, as they also won gold in the same event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with Yang Qian and Yang Haoran.
Yang Qian, who won the first gold medal at Tokyo 2020 in the individual 10-meter air rifle event, had to receive her medal while masked due to pandemic restrictions, marking a stark contrast to the more relaxed celebrations at Paris 2024.
Kazakhstan’s Historic Bronze Medal
Earlier on Saturday, Kazakhstan’s Alexandra Le and Islam Satpayev made history as the first medalists of the Paris 2024 Olympics. They secured the bronze medal by defeating Germany’s Anna Janssen and Maximilian Ulbrich with a decisive score of 17-5.
“I’m feeling perfect. This was the first (Olympic) competition for me, and I got third place, so it’s perfect,” Satpayev said, expressing his joy and pride in their achievement.
