Nearly 2,000 children in Clark County foster care are heading back to school with brand-new backpacks, fresh supplies, and a deeper sense of community support.
A three-week initiative led by Clark County Family Services inspired an outpouring of generosity, totaling nearly $362,000 in donations and essential goods for local foster children. Volunteers, businesses, and public agencies united to ensure no child starts the school year without the tools they need to succeed.
Massive turnout, personal support, and lasting impact
From July 22 to July 25, nearly 150 volunteers—including a team of 50 from Southwest Airlines—helped prepare personalized packages at the distribution hub. Their work supported over 1,900 registered children, each receiving tailored items based on their needs. The campaign provided backpacks filled with grade-level school supplies, classroom essentials like wipes and tissues, new shoes, and even haircut vouchers.
For the youngest in care, ages 0–3, Baby’s Bounty delivered diapers, baby wipes, and soft learning tools. Meanwhile, FirstMed stepped in to offer free immunizations and sports physicals, creating a one-stop experience for foster families preparing for the school year.
A total of 1,795 backpacks were distributed during the main event, with support continuing at Peggy’s Attic for late arrivals. Services for older children will continue through August 7.
Community collaboration in full force
The event showcased what’s possible when local agencies and businesses align. In addition to Clark County Family Services, key contributors included CASA Las Vegas, Paul Mitchell The School, Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Capriotti’s, Therapy Blocks, Lazy Dog, Daughters of the American Revolution, Cut & Taste, and dozens more.
Each partner helped create a deeply personalized experience. From brand-new shoes to one-on-one service, every detail sent a message: These children matter. That message carried weight as they packed each bag, staffed each table, and greeted each family.
More than school supplies—a call to action
While the event met urgent back-to-school needs, it also underscored the deeper challenge: providing year-round support for children in care. Officials reminded the community that the most powerful support of all is becoming a foster parent.
Clark County Family Services continues its push to recruit foster families willing to provide stability, guidance, and compassion. The department offers comprehensive training and ongoing resources to support those who step forward.
The need is ongoing—and so are the ways to help. Peggy’s Attic accepts in-kind donations year-round, from new clothing to basic hygiene supplies. Each item donated becomes part of a child’s new beginning.
Your opportunity to make an impact
If you missed this drive, there’s still time to make a difference. Support continues through Peggy’s Attic, and foster care recruitment is active year-round. Whether you donate, volunteer, or open your home, you become part of the solution.
