Searches Conducted at French Offices of X — Cybercrime Investigation Expands
French authorities escalated their investigation into the social media platform X on Tuesday. The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed that searches were under way at the company’s French offices. The action is part of a broader probe that began in January 2025.
According to prosecutors, the searches were carried out by the cybercrime unit. In addition, the operation included support from the French police’s own cybercrime division. Europol was also involved. As a result, the investigation has taken on an international dimension.
There was no immediate public response from X regarding the searches.

Allegations of Algorithmic Bias Triggered the Probe — Digital Systems Under Scrutiny
The Paris prosecutor’s office stated that the investigation was launched after a lawmaker raised concerns. Specifically, the lawmaker alleged that biased algorithms on X may have distorted the operation of an automated data processing system.
As a result, prosecutors opened a formal inquiry to examine whether the platform’s systems were manipulated. Initially, the focus was limited to technical concerns. However, the scope of the probe has since widened significantly.
Authorities are now examining whether algorithmic practices may have contributed to broader violations under French law.
Expanded Charges Include Serious Criminal Allegations — Organized Activity Investigated
Since January, the investigation has expanded to cover multiple alleged offences. According to prosecutors, these include potential complicity in the spread of pornographic images involving minors. The probe also includes alleged dissemination of sexually explicit deepfakes.
In addition, investigators are examining possible denial of crimes against humanity. Allegations of manipulating an automated data processing system as part of an organized group are also under review. Consequently, the case now spans both cybercrime and criminal law.
Prosecutors emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing. They also noted that no conclusions have been reached at this stage.
Elon Musk and Linda Yaccarino Summoned — Executives Called to Paris
As part of the expanded probe, French authorities have summoned Elon Musk for questioning. Former X CEO Linda Yaccarino has also been summoned.
According to the prosecutor’s office, both individuals have been called for voluntary interviews scheduled for April 20, 2026, in Paris. The summons were issued in their capacities as de facto and de jure managers of the platform at the time of the alleged events.
Yaccarino resigned from her role as CEO in July 2025 after two years leading the company. Nevertheless, prosecutors stated that her tenure falls within the period under investigation.

Prosecutor’s Office Leaves X Platform — Communication Strategy Changes
In a notable development, the Paris prosecutor’s office announced it will no longer use X for official communications. Instead, it will publish updates through LinkedIn and Instagram.
LinkedIn is owned by Microsoft, while Instagram is owned by Meta. Prosecutors did not specify whether the decision was directly related to the investigation. However, the timing has drawn attention.
This move signals a shift in how French judicial authorities engage with the public online. It also reflects growing scrutiny of major social media platforms across Europe.
Broader Implications for Tech Regulation — Increased Oversight Ahead
Meanwhile, the case highlights increasing regulatory pressure on global technology companies operating in Europe. Lawmakers and regulators continue to examine how automated systems influence public discourse.
As investigations like this proceed, platforms may face stricter oversight. Therefore, the outcome of the probe could have implications beyond France. For now, prosecutors say the investigation remains active.
