Future Las Vegas Museum of Art Receives Land for $150 Million Project
Pritzker Prize-Winner Francis Kéré Announced as Design Architect
Historic Approval and Site Allocation
On September 4, 2024, Las Vegas reached a significant milestone as the City Council approved plans for the future Las Vegas Museum of Art (LVMA). The city has allocated 1.5 acres of land in Symphony Park for this ambitious project. The LVMA will be designed by the renowned Pritzker Prize-winning architect Francis Kéré, Founder of Kéré Architecture.
Design Vision by Francis Kéré
The new museum will span 90,000 square feet and feature a thoughtfully planned design by Kéré Architecture. The building will include two stories of exhibition space, elevated above a vibrant open plaza and adjacent sculpture park. Kéré’s design turns the plaza into a dynamic front porch, fostering a welcoming environment for public interaction and community events.
Elaine Wynn, President of the Board of Trustees for LVMA, highlighted the project’s importance: “To achieve prominence on the global stage, Las Vegas needs cultural institutions. The creation of this art museum reflects our commitment to cultural development through a public/private partnership.”
Support from Local Leaders
Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating, “The Trustees of LVMA have assembled the right team and plans. We eagerly anticipate the museum becoming a key addition to our city’s cultural landscape.”
Ward 5 Councilman Cedric Crear added, “Symphony Park is already a cultural hub. The new museum will enhance this vibrant area and offer a significant cultural resource.”
Partnership with LACMA
LVMA will collaborate with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the largest art museum in the Western United States. This partnership will allow LVMA to borrow artworks, host exhibitions, and benefit from LACMA’s expertise. Michael Govan, CEO of LACMA, remarked, “This partnership aligns our cities and enhances our shared commitment to the arts.”
Economic Impact and Community Benefits
The museum is estimated to cost $150 million, with construction set to begin by February 2027. The project is expected to generate $191 million in economic activity and $80 million in wages. Once operational, LVMA will have an annual economic impact of $181.5 million. Additionally, over 300,000 students from the Clark County School District will benefit from the museum’s educational programs.
Enhancing Symphony Park’s Cultural Landscape
The LVMA will join other prominent institutions in Symphony Park, including The Smith Center for the Performing Arts and the Discovery Children’s Museum. The 61-acre district will also feature a new 400-room Marriott hotel, further strengthening its role as a cultural and residential hub.
Looking Forward
As the LVMA project moves forward, residents and visitors can look forward to a transformative addition to Las Vegas’s cultural scene. Stay tuned for updates on the museum’s progress and opening events.
