New research reveals that 88% of associations expect geopolitical instability to impact their operations. In fact, 85% already feel this effect. The study from The Hague & Partners Convention Bureau and ESAE surveyed 99 leaders worldwide from associations and not-for-profits. It shows how these organizations face serious challenges as global tensions rise.

Most associations are unprepared for fast-changing global risks
Only 13% of organizations feel fully prepared for ongoing geopolitical risks. Meanwhile, 72% admit they are somewhat prepared, and 14% say they are unprepared. This reveals a widespread lack of resilience and agility. Therefore, many leaders recognize the urgent need to strengthen governance and improve strategic communication. According to Bas Schot, Head of The Hague & Partners, associations must adapt quickly because instability has become a constant reality.
Populism increases risks for leadership and governance
The rise of populism worries 77% of respondents. Moreover, almost 30% rate their concern very high, fearing it will influence board decisions negatively. As a result, 81% of associations now focus on reinforcing their core missions and values. In addition, 63% are enhancing their governance policies, and 61% work toward more diverse boards. These steps help protect organisations from external political pressure.
Lessons from past crises help but gaps slow progress
Most leaders (83%) apply lessons from crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and the financial crisis to respond better today. However, 42% admit significant knowledge gaps remain. Closing these gaps will improve their ability to adapt and thrive in the future.
Event planning shifts as instability affects mobility
Only 27% say political instability has disrupted events in Europe. However, 28% have moved their events to more politically stable regions. This trend shows that flexibility is becoming critical in event planning. Associations must continue adjusting strategies to maintain success amid uncertainty.
Ongoing research will provide deeper insights soon
This report is the first part of a broader study. A detailed white paper will explore how geopolitics, communications, technology, and resilience connect. The research will expand with partners like Ottawa Tourism and will be released at IMEX America.
Survey details and respondent profile
The study included 99 senior leaders mainly from Europe (78%) and North America (16%), with smaller groups from Asia, Africa, and Australasia. Most participants come from associations (68%), followed by not-for-profits, professional societies, and public sector bodies. Over half hold executive or board positions, highlighting the data’s senior-level perspective.
