BMA House 100 year anniversary
LONDON, UK — In a momentous year for British medicine, BMA House has kicked off a year-long celebration to honour its 100-year legacy as the proud headquarters of the British Medical Association (BMA). The BMA House 100 year anniversary marks a significant milestone in its history.
The journey began back in 1925, when the BMA relocated from 429 The Strand to its current home in Tavistock Square, in the heart of Bloomsbury. The building—originally designed in 1911 by renowned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens—was first intended for the Theosophical Society. However, history took a turn. During World War I, the unfinished structure became a temporary base for the Ministry of Munitions. Eventually, in 1923, the BMA stepped in, acquired the building, and completed it. Just two years later, the organization officially moved in.
A Storied Past and a Bright Future
Over the decades, BMA House has transformed into much more than just a headquarters. Today, it thrives as a premier venue for conferences, meetings, and private events. Its striking architecture, period features, and 22 versatile event spaces—including a lush botanical garden and tranquil courtyard—create an unforgettable setting.
Importantly, BMA House has also taken bold steps toward sustainability. Through smart choices and innovative practices, the venue has reduced waste, lowered emissions, and prioritized green operations. These efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. In fact, industry leaders have recognized BMA House with several awards for environmental excellence.
Centenary Celebrations in Full Swing
To celebrate the BMA House 100 year anniversary, the BMA has lined up a range of special events throughout 2025. These activities not only pay tribute to the building’s architectural heritage but also highlight its enduring role in the medical community and public life.
“This building tells a story of resilience, innovation, and dedication to healthcare,” said a BMA spokesperson. “As we reflect on the past 100 years, we also look forward to the future with optimism and purpose.”
