“The New Global Screen Economy” to guide discussions across film and television industry
The American Film Market has announced the first official theme in the event’s history ahead of its 2026 edition in Los Angeles.
Organizers revealed that the 2026 market will center on “The New Global Screen Economy,” a theme designed to reflect the major changes reshaping the global entertainment business.
The event will take place Nov. 10-15 at the Fairmont Century Plaza, with screenings hosted at AMC Century City 15.
Organizers point to major industry shifts
According to organizers, the new theme will focus on how content is financed, produced, distributed, and delivered to audiences worldwide.
The film and television business has undergone major changes in recent years. Streaming growth, evolving audience habits, and shifts in financing models have altered how independent projects are developed and sold.
The 2026 theme is expected to shape programming, panel discussions, partnerships, and networking events throughout the week.
AFM is produced by the Independent Film & Television Alliance, also known as IFTA.
Early exhibitor commitments show strong momentum
Organizers said 90 exhibitors have already committed to the market seven months ahead of the event. Companies confirmed so far include major players in production, financing, sales, and distribution.
Among the companies expected to participate are Lionsgate, NEON, StudioCanal, Gaumont, and Millennium Media.
The early response signals continued confidence in AFM’s role within the global independent film sector.
Industry professionals use the market to negotiate deals, secure financing, explore partnerships, and screen new projects.
Los Angeles remains central to global film business
AFM’s continued presence in Los Angeles also reflects the city’s importance to the entertainment industry despite ongoing global competition from other production markets.
The market returned to Los Angeles after previous editions outside the city. Organizers say strong exhibitor engagement reinforces the value of keeping the event based in Hollywood.
The six-day gathering is expected to attract professionals from across the film and television business, including producers, distributors, investors, and sales agents.
Leadership says industry is entering transition period
Jackie Brenneman said the entertainment business is at a turning point and needs to focus on creating new opportunities rather than relying on older models.
She described the 2026 edition as one of the most important in recent years due to rapid changes across the industry.
Organizers also said additional upgrades and new features for the market will be announced in the coming months.
AFM continues to serve independent film sector
The American Film Market remains one of the largest annual gatherings for the independent entertainment business. The event brings together companies involved in film financing, production, distribution, and international sales.
Unlike studio-focused industry events, AFM centers heavily on independent film and television projects.
The market also functions as the annual convention for IFTA, which represents independent production and distribution companies worldwide.
