Paris 2024 Paralympic Games Begin with Historic Opening Ceremony at Place de la Concorde
Paris, August 28, 2024 — The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games commenced with an extraordinary opening ceremony at the iconic Place de la Concorde, marking the first time in history that the Paralympic Games have opened outside a traditional stadium. This monumental event showcased the spirit of inclusivity and excellence that defines the Paralympic movement.
The ceremony featured a parade of 168 delegations, transforming the largest square in Paris into a stunning open-air arena. The athletes paraded around the historic Obelisk at the foot of the Champs-Elysées, setting the stage for a visually spectacular evening. The event culminated with the Paralympic Flame igniting the Cauldron, illuminating the Parisian sky and symbolizing the beginning of these highly anticipated Games.
A Celebration of Art and Inclusion
Under the artistic direction of choreographer Alexander Ekman, the ceremony brought together over 500 artists, including more than 140 dancers and 16 performers with disabilities. The Place de la Concorde was reimagined as a breathtaking scenographic setting, designed by Bruno Delavenère, to highlight the beauty of the athletes and performers. The costumes, created by young designer Louis Gabriel Nouchi, added a touch of elegance and modernity to the celebration.
The event also featured five artistic tableaux, each delivering a powerful and poetic message about inclusion and the role of people with disabilities in society. These performances, accompanied by the music direction of Victor le Masne and the lighting design of Thomas Dechandon, captivated the 15,000 spectators present at the Champs-Elysées and the 35,000 seated around the square.

A Parade of Champions and a Musical Extravaganza
Following the parade of athletes, French Para athletes Sandrine Martinet and Arnaud Assoumani took the Paralympic oath, embodying the values of courage and determination that drive the Paralympic Games. John McFall, the first astronaut with a disability to join the European Space Agency, alongside other notable figures, carried the Paralympic flag to the Place de la Concorde, adding a historical significance to the ceremony.
The musical aspect of the evening was nothing short of spectacular. Renowned pianist Chilly Gonzales opened the ceremony with an original work titled “Countdown,” while Christine and the Queens delivered a powerful rendition of “Non, je ne regrette rien” by Edith Piaf. The parade of athletes was set to iconic French music, including “La Valse d’Amélie Poulain” by Yann Tiersen, creating an emotional and patriotic atmosphere.

Honoring Paralympic Legends
Paris 2024 paid tribute to three legendary Paralympic champions who will compete in these Games: Bebe Vio, Oksana Masters, and Markus Rehm. Additionally, French Paralympic heroes Assia El Hannouni, Christian Lachaud, and Béatrice Hess carried the Paralympic Flame through the Jardin des Tuileries, symbolizing the unity and strength of the Paralympic community.
The ceremony concluded with the lighting of the Cauldron by five torchbearers from the French delegation, accompanied by an innovative display of light and mist. This Cauldron, designed by Mathieu Lehanneur and powered by electricity from EDF, a Premium Partner of Paris 2024, represents a sustainable and forward-thinking approach to the Games.
