Young Artist Shines at Las Vegas Billboard Contest

This morning, Las Vegas gave a young artist a moment to remember. Johan Mendez Herrera, a third-grade student, saw his artwork displayed on a full-size billboard at Harry Reid International Airport. His colorful design won the Spring Billboard Artwork Contest, organized by Clark County in partnership with Connell Outdoor Advertising and the Department of Aviation.

The unveiling took place at Siegfried and Roy Park, where families, school officials, and community leaders gathered for the special reveal.

The Theme That Inspired Young Artists

This season’s theme, “What Las Vegas Means to Me,” encouraged elementary school students to reflect on their hometown. Using paint, pencil, and plenty of imagination, they created personal stories rooted in pride and connection.

Johan’s piece stood out. His blend of bright colors and heartfelt imagery offered a unique vision of the city. The judges saw creativity, clarity, and balance—qualities that helped him rise to the top.

Community Leaders Celebrate Student Voices

During the ceremony, Clark County Commissioner Jim Gibson applauded Johan’s work. He explained how public art like this helps students build confidence and find their voice.

By showcasing youth expression in a public space, the contest promotes both artistic growth and civic engagement. Other local leaders echoed Gibson’s words, noting how these types of projects spark pride across the community.

Private Partnership Drives the Program

Support from the private sector helped bring this artwork to life. Connell Outdoor Advertising donated the billboard space and covered printing costs for Johan’s winning design.

Don Krueger, the company’s Vice President, spoke at the unveiling. He emphasized Connell’s ongoing commitment to youth programs and the value of empowering young creators.

A Platform for Student Recognition

The Spring Billboard Artwork Contest takes place twice a year. Each round invites local students to share their vision of Las Vegas through original art.

Selected pieces are printed and displayed publicly, often for the first time in the student’s life. These billboards offer visibility and recognition that go far beyond classroom walls. As a result, students build confidence, feel valued, and stay engaged.

One Child’s Art, A City’s Message

Johan’s artwork will remain at the airport for several weeks. It’s more than just a drawing. It sends a clear message to every traveler arriving in Las Vegas.

This city celebrates youth, creativity, and storytelling. It reminds us that art doesn’t have to be loud to make an impact. Sometimes, it just needs the right stage Just Now News.
