Notre-Dame de Paris Reopens: A Historic Celebration of Faith and Art
Paris, December 2024 – After years of tireless restoration, the iconic Notre-Dame de Paris is set to reopen its doors, marking a historic moment of faith, art, and resilience. From December 7, 2024, to June 8, 2025, the cathedral will host a series of grand ceremonies and events, offering locals and visitors alike a chance to celebrate the rebirth of this cultural and spiritual masterpiece.
A Grand Reopening Ceremony (December 7-8, 2024)
The reopening festivities begin with a solemn service on December 7, presided over by the Archbishop of Paris. Dignitaries including the President of the Republic, officials, and donors will gather to witness the symbolic “opening of the doors” ritual.
This moving ceremony features the Archbishop striking the cathedral doors with his staff as Psalm 121 resonates throughout the sacred space:
“How joyful it was when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord!’”
The inaugural Mass on December 8 will consecrate the newly restored high altar. Relics of five saints, including Saint Marie Eugénie Milleret and Saint Charles de Foucauld, will be sealed into the altar during an elaborate five-step consecration process. The event will bring together nearly 170 bishops and clergy from across the globe, alongside representatives from Paris’ parishes and Eastern Catholic communities.
The Octave of Reopening (December 8-15, 2024)
From December 8 to December 15, Notre-Dame will host an octave of celebration, symbolizing unity and renewal. Key highlights include:
- Wednesday, December 11: A special evening welcoming Parisian merchants and local residents.
- Thursday, December 12: The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, drawing crowds along the Seine.
- Friday, December 13: The solemn return of the Holy Crown of Thorns, now displayed in its newly designed setting—a profound moment of reverence and gratitude.
Masses during this octave are open to the public, offering a rare opportunity to participate in this spiritual renaissance.

Starting December 16, 2024, Notre-Dame will resume its daily schedule, welcoming visitors from 7:45 AM to 7:00 PM with free entry. To enhance the experience, an optional online reservation system will help minimize waiting times, ensuring smooth access for all.
