Community Unites to Support Screening and Prevention
On October 2, 2025, the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign turned pink to celebrate breast cancer awareness month. Clark County Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick and the Nevada Cancer Coalition led the ceremony to promote early detection and encourage women to schedule regular mammograms. The pink glow served as a powerful reminder of community unity, prevention, and hope.

Commissioner Highlights the Power of Early Detection
Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick spoke about the importance of early action in the fight against breast cancer. She reminded attendees that regular mammograms are the most effective way to save lives. Her message encouraged women across Nevada to use breast cancer awareness month as motivation to prioritize their health and schedule their screenings.
Breaking Down Barriers to Care
Cari Herington, executive director of the Nevada Cancer Coalition, addressed the ongoing challenges that prevent many Nevadans from receiving timely breast cancer screenings. She noted that fear, limited access, and misinformation remain major obstacles. Breast cancer awareness campaigns like this event help spread accurate information, connect families with available resources, and inspire confidence in preventive care.
Statistics Show Why Awareness Matters
Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in Nevada after skin cancer. When detected early, it has a 91 percent five-year survival rate. Yet more than 37 percent of women aged 40 and older are behind on their regular screenings. By promoting education, access, and early detection, breast cancer awareness initiatives continue to make a life-saving difference across the state.
A Symbol of Hope for the Community
The pink glow of the Las Vegas sign will continue throughout October as a symbol of strength and hope. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stop by, take photos, and share them online to help spread awareness. Breast cancer awareness extends far beyond one month—it is a continuous effort to educate, support, and protect lives through early detection and community action.
