Space-Based Connectivity May Cut Fiber Costs by Over 35% Across Rural EU Regions
BRUSSELS, — A newly released report from Analysys Mason delivers a game-changing forecast for Europe’s digital future. The study finds that LEO satellite constellations could reduce telecom operators’ infrastructure costs by up to €26 billion across seven EU countries by 2030. The report highlights LEO satellite cost savings for telecom operators. The results suggest that space-based broadband solutions may offer a cost-effective alternative to fiber deployment in remote areas, without compromising on performance or speed.
The study aligns with the goals of the EU Digital Decade, which aims to ensure nationwide gigabit-capable broadband access by 2030. While fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) remains the preferred technology, its installation in sparsely populated regions continues to drive costs significantly higher. This is where LEO satellite systems enter the conversation—providing the same broadband capacity, yet requiring far less infrastructure investment.

Analysys Mason Reveals Major Cost Savings Potential
According to the report, LEO satellites could serve between 2.6 and 4.2 million customers across Czechia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, and Poland. These households represent up to 42% of the population in target zones where FTTH would be financially burdensome. By supplementing terrestrial infrastructure with satellite coverage, the telecom industry could cut required subsidies by 30–37%, potentially reducing Europe’s fiber budget by €21 to €26 billion.
The findings also emphasize that these satellite systems are not replacements, but rather complements to ground-based networks. They offer a hybrid model that enables faster rollout and broader reach, especially in isolated regions where digging and laying fiber simply isn’t feasible.
