In 2024, the historic and vibrant city of Marseille will play a significant role in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The city’s harbor will host the Olympic sailing events, while 10 thrilling Olympic football matches will take place in Marseille’s renowned stadiums. As a city deeply connected to the sea, Marseille offers exceptional conditions for sailing, making it an ideal location for these prestigious events.
Exceptional Sailing Conditions in Marseille
Marseille’s harbor is celebrated for its outstanding sailing conditions, recognized globally by top sailors and regatta enthusiasts. The natural body of water offers perfect settings for high-quality sporting spectacles, ensuring both competitive excitement and excellent conditions for athletes. Home to more than 70 athletes from the French team, who train daily as part of the Pôle France de Voile, Marseille has become a hub for both national and international sailing teams. The city’s long-standing expertise in hosting nautical events further solidifies its reputation as a premier venue for Olympic sailing.
The Olympic Marina of Roucas-Blanc
Central to Marseille’s Olympic project is the creation of an Olympic Marina, including the renovation of the Roucas-Blanc nautical stadium. Located at the northern end of the Prado beaches, this facility will accommodate athletes and spectators alike. The development, funded by the State, the City of Marseille, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region, the Bouches-du-Rhône Department, and the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis, will feature approximately 7,000 m² of new buildings, 17,000 m² of restructured outdoor spaces, and a redeveloped basin.
Modernizing the Marina for Legacy and Sustainability
The planned works for the marina encompass both land and maritime developments. The project will create a visual connection between the sea and the city, enhancing the aesthetic and functional aspects of the area. Key improvements include:
- South Zone: Five new buildings around the basin will house the municipal Sailing School, technical services, educational spaces, and the Pôle France de Voile.
- North Zone: Rehabilitation of existing structures to modern standards.
- Maritime Works: Installation of an internal dike to protect the basin from sea inlets, hydraulic structures to improve water quality, and ecological installations to promote biodiversity. A technical dock will optimize boat maintenance, and a northern footbridge will provide safe pedestrian access.
Infrastructure Enhancements for Better Accessibility
To improve accessibility and flow, a new roundabout will be constructed at the junction of Promenade Georges Pompidou and Rue du Commandant Rolland, along with roadway requalification. Investments in rainwater management will enhance water quality and preserve biodiversity, featuring new rainwater collectors and drains to manage waste during heavy rainfall.
Timeline and Phases of Work
The development is divided into two major phases:
- Pre-Olympic Phase (February 2022 – end of 2023): Completion of land and sea works, network development for rainwater management, and road redevelopment.
- Post-Olympic Phase (Fall 2024 – Spring 2025): Further development of the Roucas-Blanc Nautical Stadium and municipal sailing center.
Social and Environmental Legacy
The renovation of the Roucas-Blanc nautical stadium will not only meet Olympic standards but also provide a long-term legacy for the people of Marseille. The upgraded facility will democratize sailing, diversify activities, enhance user comfort and safety, and increase the site’s capacity to host local, national, and international sporting events. With improved urban and landscape planning, the stadium will offer year-round access to the coast, fostering a deeper connection with the marine environment and promoting environmental education.
The new nautical stadium will feature over 131 trees and plants adapted to the Mediterranean climate, enhancing the ecological value and beauty of the Roucas-Blanc cove.
