WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Nevada Capitol Christmas tree arrived at the U.S. Capitol nearly a month ago after traveling thousands of miles from public lands in Nevada, marking the state’s role in a long-running national holiday tradition.
The towering white fir reached Washington, D.C., about 25 days ago following a cross-country journey that included a planned stop in Las Vegas. Since its arrival, the tree has stood on Capitol grounds as the official holiday tree in Washington, D.C., drawing visitors during one of the busiest times of year.

Las Vegas Stop Gave Nevadans a Closer Look
Before leaving the state, transport crews stopped with the Nevada Capitol Christmas tree in Las Vegas. The pause allowed residents and visitors to see the massive evergreen before it continued east.
People gathered to take photos and learn how a tree from Nevada’s mountains would soon stand at the nation’s Capitol. Forest officials answered questions and explained the significance of the tradition.
Officials said the stop helped connect southern Nevada to an event usually centered in Washington, D.C., and gave residents a sense of ownership in the tree’s journey.

Highlighting Nevada’s Forested Landscapes
Although Nevada is often associated with desert terrain, the Nevada Capitol Christmas tree highlighted the state’s forested regions at higher elevations. White fir trees grow in cooler mountain environments and form part of Nevada’s mixed-conifer forests.
Those forests play a key role in protecting watersheds and supporting wildlife. Officials said the tree’s selection helped bring attention to landscapes many people do not typically associate with Nevada.
Informational displays near the tree in Washington, D.C. describe its origin and explain how public lands support national traditions.
Selected Through Active Forest Management
The U.S. Forest Service selected the Nevada Capitol Christmas tree after a months-long review process. Foresters evaluated several trees before choosing one that met size, shape, and safety requirements.
Crews removed the tree as part of an active forest management project. According to officials, the project focused on improving forest health and reducing wildfire risk.
Forest managers regularly thin overcrowded areas to limit competition for water and nutrients. These efforts also help slow the spread of wildfires. Officials said using a tree from those projects for a national display adds public value to the work.
Transport and Installation at the Capitol
After leaving Las Vegas, crews transported the Nevada Capitol Christmas tree through several states under escort. Drivers followed a carefully planned route to avoid obstacles and delays.
Once the tree arrived in Washington, D.C., installation crews used cranes and specialized equipment to raise it near the Capitol building. Workers secured the base and completed safety checks before decorating the tree.
Capitol officials said the installation process requires coordination among multiple agencies and takes several days to complete.
A Point of Pride for Nevada
State and federal officials said the Nevada Capitol Christmas tree brought national attention to Nevada’s public lands and forest stewardship efforts.
For Nevadans who saw the tree during its stop in Las Vegas, the journey created a personal connection to its final destination. Many said it was meaningful to know a piece of their state now stands at the center of the nation’s capital.

Beyond the Holiday Season
Now standing weeks after its arrival, the Nevada Capitol Christmas tree represents more than seasonal decoration. Officials said it reflects cooperation between states and federal agencies, as well as responsible management of public lands.
As visitors continue to pass through Capitol grounds, the tree in Washington, D.C. remains a visible reminder of Nevada’s role in a national tradition.
