Documentary examines human impact of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Atomic Echoes, currently airing on PBS, examines the long-term human effects of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The film features interviews with Japanese hibakusha and American atomic veterans. Many are elderly and represent the last generation able to provide first-hand accounts. The Atomic Echoes documentary screening brings these voices to a public audience.

Filmmakers draw from family history

The documentary is co-produced by Karin Tanabe and Victoria Kelly, whose families were affected by World War II on opposite sides.

Tanabe’s father was born in Japan in 1943. A member of her family later served as Japan’s first post-war Minister of Education and became the first president of Hiroshima University.

Kelly’s grandfather served as an American medic in Nagasaki and later suffered from severe PTSD. Their family histories shaped the direction of the Atomic Echoes documentary screening.

Health and psychological effects highlighted

The film reports that an estimated 650,000 Japanese survivors continue to face long-term health and emotional challenges.

It also documents the experiences of approximately 200,000 American atomic veterans exposed to radiation during post-bombing operations. These issues are central to the Atomic Echoes documentary screening discussion.

Event schedule

Doors open at 6 p.m.
Screening begins at 7 p.m.
