Georges-Vallerey Pool’s Spectacular Renovation for Paris 2024 Unveiled
Renovated to host swimming, marathon swimming, and triathlon training for the Paris 2024 Games, the Georges-Vallerey swimming pool in the 20th arrondissement has undergone a spectacular transformation. This iconic site, one of the oldest renovated locations in Paris, is back in service, now featuring a brand-new retractable roof.
A Historic Venue Reimagined
Built for the 1924 Paris Games, the Georges-Vallerey swimming pool, originally named the Tourelles pool, has a storied past. It was here that American swimmer Johnny Weissmuller made history by winning four Olympic medals, including three golds. Renamed in 1954 after the passing of Georges Vallerey, a decorated swimmer who set multiple European records and won bronze in the 100-meter backstroke at the 1948 London Games, the pool remains an emblem of sporting excellence.
Modern Enhancements for a New Era
The pool has retained its Olympic dimensions of 50m x 21m and its modular character, allowing configurations of 37.5m + 12.5m or two times 25m thanks to a movable partition. The recent renovations have further enhanced its appeal, particularly with the new design of its retractable roof and a completely reconfigured, accessible reception area.
Eco-Friendly Innovations
The highlight of the renovation is the refurbished retractable roof, symbolizing a virtuous approach to construction. The 25 tons of wood from the original roof were reused and recycled to create new furniture and signage for Vallerey. This eco-responsible approach extended to modernizing water treatment systems, heating, and ventilation, making the pool more efficient and environmentally friendly.
Enhanced Accessibility and Public Engagement
Another significant aspect of the renovation is the improved accessibility for both the public and athletes. The redesigned reception area and interior accessibility features, including guidance, signage, and elevator adaptations, have made the facility more welcoming and user-friendly.
A Gem for Parisians and Athletes Alike
Before it becomes a training site for Olympic swimmers in mid-June, Parisians can enjoy this beautifully refurbished gem. The Georges-Vallerey swimming pool, with its historical significance and modern enhancements, stands as a testament to Paris’ commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing a sustainable future.
