Olympic Torch Relay Through Paris Packed with Events and Highlights
The past two days have been nothing short of spectacular as the Olympic flame made its way through the vibrant streets of Paris, igniting the city’s spirit in a celebration of unity and athletic excellence.
Starting yesterday, on the significant date of 14 July, which coincides with Bastille Day, the journey began at the iconic Champs-Élysées roundabout. The flame’s arrival was met with jubilant cheers and the start of an unforgettable procession.
From the very first steps, the celebration was in full swing. On the steps of the Petit Palais, the group D.I.V.A., comprising four opera singers accompanied by a string quartet, performed famous French operas in a festive and unconventional way, setting a jubilant tone for the relay.
The torch then headed towards the city center, winding its way through the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district (6th arrondissement) to the sound of its famous jazz, with singer and guitarist Thomas Curbillon setting the rhythm. The Panthéon (5th arrondissement) hosted a stop where choreographer Yoann Bourgeois presented a “tailor-made performance around a moving circular stage.” Further along in the 5th arrondissement, the torch visited the Institute of the Arab World, where artist Zepha led a collaborative artwork based on the meeting of alphabets, before paying homage to the healing Notre-Dame Cathedral.
The flame’s journey through the Marais district was marked by a giant drag bingo hosted by Mademoiselle Kiss. The celebration continued to the Place de la Bastille, where the Paris Opera organized an open-air dance class for 200 amateur participants. The day culminated at 11 PM at the Hôtel de Ville with a night vigil open to the public, a fitting end to a day of celebration and unity.
This morning, the flame departed from the Porte de la Chapelle arena, the only venue built within the city limits for the Games. The square, named Alice Milliat in honor of the pioneering sportswoman, hosted an exhibition of portraits of female athletes by Clémence Gouy. The relay then made its way to the iconic Montmartre, where around forty dancers performed “Murmurations,” a captivating work by choreographer Sadeck Berrabah, on the steps of the Sacré-Cœur. The spectacle wouldn’t have been complete without a vibrant French cancan at the Moulin Rouge.
As the day progressed, the flame participated in a village festival in Butte-aux-Cailles, followed by a performance of “Danse Vertikale” at the open-air Museum of Street Art (13th arrondissement). The celebration continued with a parade featuring Asian, Brazilian, and Malian percussion and dance in Belleville, culminating in a grand concert on the Place de la République.
The two-day festivities along the Olympic torch relay route in Paris have brought the city to life, showcasing its rich cultural tapestry and the unifying spirit of the Olympics.
