Jackie Boughton Joins Barbican as Executive Consultant

Industry veteran to continue supporting London’s iconic arts and events venue as Executive Consultant

LONDON — One of the most respected figures in the business events and hospitality industry is preparing for a new chapter at the Barbican.

The Barbican announced that Jackie Boughton, Director of Commercial, will step back from her full-time leadership role in September after helping shape the venue’s commercial success for more than a decade.

While her day-to-day responsibilities will change, Boughton is not leaving the organization.

Instead, she will continue supporting the Barbican as Executive Consultant, Innovation and Growth, a newly created role designed to help guide the Centre’s future development while maintaining valuable industry relationships and expertise.

The transition marks the end of an important era for one of London’s most recognizable cultural and conference venues.

At the same time, it signals the beginning of a new phase focused on innovation, growth, and long-term strategic development.

Twelve years of transformation

Boughton joined the Barbican in 2014 as Head of Business Events before eventually becoming Director of Commercial.

Over the past 12 years, she has helped transform the venue’s commercial operations while strengthening its reputation within the global events industry.

Her leadership has contributed to more than £80 million in revenue generated for both the Barbican and the City of London Corporation.

During her tenure, the venue expanded its profile across conferences, meetings, exhibitions, hospitality experiences, filming opportunities, and corporate events.

Industry leaders credit Boughton with helping position the Barbican as one of London’s premier destinations for business events.

Her work has also helped attract international clients while strengthening relationships throughout the events and hospitality sectors.

New role focuses on future growth

As Executive Consultant, Innovation and Growth, Boughton will remain closely involved with the Barbican’s long-term strategy.

Her responsibilities will include ambassadorial activities, market intelligence, advocacy, client engagement, and industry representation.

She will also support research into emerging markets and future growth opportunities.

The role allows the Barbican to retain decades of experience while continuing to benefit from Boughton’s extensive industry network.

Leaders at the venue believe the arrangement provides continuity during a period of ongoing development and change.

The position also reflects the increasing importance of innovation within the events and hospitality industries.

Widely respected industry leader

Boughton’s career spans hotels, tourism, hospitality, destination marketing, and major event venues.

Before joining the Barbican, she held several senior leadership positions across the travel and leisure sectors.

She was among the first women to serve as a board director within a privately owned hotel and apartment group.

She also played a significant role in the pre-opening and operational planning of the new Wembley Stadium.

Throughout her career, Boughton has built a reputation for combining commercial expertise with strong relationship-building skills.

Her contributions have earned recognition through numerous industry awards and rankings.

Those honors include appearances in influential lists such as the C&IT Power 50 and Event 100 Club.

Meanwhile, the Barbican’s commercial venue team has received multiple awards for innovation, customer service, sustainability, and overall performance.

Leadership praised by colleagues

Barbican Chief Executive Abigail Pogson praised Boughton’s impact on the organization.

She described Boughton as a leader who combines commercial intelligence with creativity and deep industry knowledge.

Pogson also highlighted her ability to build trust and foster strong relationships across the sector.

According to Pogson, Boughton’s leadership helped strengthen the Barbican’s position within the business events market while expanding its commercial opportunities.

She added that Boughton’s continued involvement will remain valuable as the Centre pursues future growth objectives.

Continuing influence across the sector

Boughton will also maintain several influential industry positions.

She currently serves as a Board Director for the Association of Event Venues and Drumworks.

Additionally, she remains a member of the ICCA UK & Ireland Executive Committee.

Those roles allow her to continue contributing to discussions surrounding the future of conferences, meetings, hospitality, and destination marketing.

Industry leaders say her experience remains particularly valuable as venues adapt to changing audience expectations and technological advances.

Barbican prepares for its next chapter

The Barbican remains one of the world’s leading arts and conference venues.

Located in the City of London, the Centre hosts everything from international conferences and business meetings to concerts, exhibitions, and cultural performances.

Its unique combination of arts programming and corporate event facilities has helped distinguish it from traditional conference venues.

As Boughton transitions into her consultancy role, the Barbican’s established commercial leadership team will continue managing day-to-day operations.

The organization believes the combination of experienced leadership and strategic continuity positions the venue well for future success.

For Boughton, the next chapter offers an opportunity to remain connected to an institution she helped shape while continuing to influence the wider events industry.

For the Barbican, it ensures that one of its most influential voices will remain part of the conversation as the Centre looks toward the future.
