Chicago welcomes a new landmark celebrating leadership, democracy and community engagement
CHICAGO — The Obama Presidential Center officially opens to the public on Friday, June 19, following an invitation-only dedication ceremony held Thursday on Chicago’s South Side.
Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama will join thousands of invited guests, community leaders, elected officials and supporters to celebrate the opening of the long-awaited campus in historic Jackson Park later today. The dedication marked the culmination of nearly a decade of planning and development.
The new center is expected to become one of Chicago’s most visited cultural destinations.
Located on a 19.3-acre campus at 6001 South Stony Island Avenue, the Obama Presidential Center was developed by the Obama Foundation as a civic and cultural hub rather than a traditional presidential library. Organizers estimate the site could attract between 750,000 and one million visitors annually.

Public opening arrives on Juneteenth
Friday’s public opening carries special significance because it coincides with Juneteenth.
The Obama Foundation planned a three-day opening celebration featuring music, community activities, art programs, tours and family-friendly events throughout the campus. Public festivities will continue through the weekend.
Demand for tickets has been extraordinary.
Museum reservations for opening weekend sold out quickly, while many future dates have already reached capacity. However, much of the campus remains free and accessible to visitors.

A center focused on civic engagement
The campus includes an eight-story museum tower that chronicles the lives and public service careers of Barack and Michelle Obama.
Visitors will find exhibits exploring the Obama presidency, the civil rights movement and the broader story of American democracy. The museum also features artifacts from the White House years, interactive exhibits and commissioned artwork from dozens of artists.
Additional features include a public library branch, athletic facilities, playgrounds, gardens, community gathering spaces and the John Lewis Plaza. Organizers say the goal is to inspire future generations of leaders while encouraging civic participation.

Celebrity-filled dedication draws national attention
Thursday’s invitation-only dedication ceremony featured appearances and performances by several major entertainers and past Presidents.
The lineup included Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Common, Christina Aguilera, Bono and The Edge, among others. The event was livestreamed worldwide.
The center represents one of the largest presidential projects ever privately funded in the United States, with development costs reaching approximately $850 million.
For many visitors, Friday’s opening represents more than the debut of a museum.
The Obama Presidential Center serves as a new gathering place dedicated to history, education, public service and the power of community engagement.
