A Storied Legacy Comes to an End as Las Vegas Prepares for a New Iconic Landmark
The Mirage Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip, famous for its iconic volcano, is set to close its doors on July 17, 2024, after an illustrious 34-year run. The resort, which boasts 3,000 rooms, will undergo a significant three-year renovation that will transform it into the Hard Rock Las Vegas, complete with a towering 700-foot guitar-shaped hotel.
The End of an Era
Opened in 1989 by casino mogul Steve Wynn, The Mirage heralded a new era of luxury resorts on the Strip. It was the first to introduce a sidewalk attraction with its volcanic eruption show, a feature that inspired other landmark properties like the Bellagio and the Venetian to create their own unique spectacles, such as dancing fountains and canals.
The Mirage was not just known for its volcano. It was home to Siegfried and Roy’s legendary white tiger shows and the acclaimed Cirque du Soleil show set to Beatles music, both of which became quintessential Las Vegas experiences.
A New Beginning
In a statement on its Facebook account, The Mirage expressed excitement about the upcoming transformation: “We look forward to the beginning of an exciting journey into a new era as Hard Rock Las Vegas will ignite the Strip with entertainment, innovation, and world-class hospitality.” The announcement has sparked a flood of nostalgic comments from fans reminiscing about their experiences at the resort.
The Mirage’s transition to the Hard Rock Las Vegas marks the return of the Hard Rock brand to the city. Hard Rock International, which acquired the property from MGM Resorts in 2022 for over $1 billion, plans to demolish the volcano to make way for new rooms and facilities, mirroring the success of its Florida property.
Impact on Employees and Guests
The closure will affect more than 3,000 Mirage employees, who will be laid off starting in July. Hard Rock has committed over $80 million in severance payments, and the Culinary Workers Union, representing about half of the employees, announced that workers would receive $2,000 for each year of service, with the option to return when the hotel reopens in 2027.
Guests with reservations beyond July 14 will have their bookings canceled and receive refunds. Casino chips must be used by the closing date but can be redeemed at neighboring Treasure Island for 120 days after The Mirage shuts down.
