Celebrating Emerging Design Talent
2024 HD/West Elm Student Competition Winner
The expo also served as a platform to celebrate new talent with the announcement of the HD/West Elm Student Product Design Competition winner. Ilyra Carlton, from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), took the top honors with her innovative Rogan barstool, which marries functionality with sleek design, featuring upholstered leather cushions and a sturdy wood frame. This year’s competition, judged by West Elm Contract design director Paul Galli, highlighted Carlton’s design for its playfulness and versatility, suitable for both hospitality and commercial environments.
Maria Francesca Melillo, also from SCAD, was recognized as this year’s finalist for her Chroma barstool, which blends chrome, leather, and wood to offer a fresh take on elegance.
HD Expo 2024 provided a comprehensive look at the latest trends in the design industry, from innovative products that blend functionality with aesthetic appeal to the celebration of emerging designers who are shaping the future of design.
