Skynopy Partners with CNES for Faster Frequency Approvals

French space agency to support frequency approvals and network expansion

Paris-based satellite connectivity company Skynopy is expanding its partnership with CNES in a move aimed at accelerating the deployment of its global ground station network.

The agreement centers on frequency management for antennas in France. This is a key step required before any ground station can begin operations. By working more closely with CNES, Skynopy expects to reduce delays tied to regulatory approvals and bring new sites online faster.

The partnership marks the latest stage in a relationship that has developed alongside the company’s rapid growth.

Early backing evolves into strategic support

Skynopy, founded in 2023, has received support from CNES since its early days. That support began with technical collaboration and later expanded into financial backing through the SpaceFounders accelerator program.

SpaceFounders, created by CNES with European partners, invests in startups that show strong growth and market traction. CNES became a shareholder in Skynopy through that program, signaling long-term confidence in the company’s model.

Industry observers note that this type of public-private collaboration is becoming more common in Europe’s space sector. Agencies are increasingly supporting startups beyond early research stages.

Frequency access remains a key barrier in space infrastructure

One of the main challenges facing ground station operators is access to radio frequency spectrum. Each new antenna requires approval from national regulators, a process that can slow expansion.

Under the new agreement, CNES will help Skynopy navigate these procedures in France. The agency’s expertise is expected to streamline applications and improve coordination with regulators.

For Skynopy, faster approvals could have a direct impact on growth. The company is building a distributed network of ground stations to support satellite operators worldwide.

Ka-band technology plays central role in growth strategy

The partnership also builds on earlier work between Skynopy and CNES in Ka-band technology. This frequency range allows higher data throughput compared to traditional systems.

CNES supported early development in this area, helping Skynopy shape its technical roadmap. The company now uses Ka-band as a core part of its offering.

Higher throughput is becoming more important as satellite constellations expand. Earth observation and communications systems require faster data transfer and lower latency.

Skynopy has already tested these capabilities in collaboration with major industry players. Demonstrations have included support for real-time satellite data and multi-band operations.

Rapid expansion reflects growing demand for ground services

Since its launch, Skynopy has scaled quickly. The company now operates 17 ground station sites across several continents and serves about ten satellite clients.

These include major European aerospace companies and newer entrants in the NewSpace sector. The company has also raised €15 million to support further expansion.

Its business model is based on virtualized infrastructure. This allows satellite operators to access ground services without building their own stations.

By reducing setup time and cost, the approach is gaining traction in a market that is becoming more competitive.

Broader shift toward public-private collaboration

The expanded partnership highlights a broader shift in the space industry. Government agencies are playing a more active role in supporting commercial operators.

In Europe, this approach is seen as a way to strengthen regional capabilities and reduce reliance on non-European providers.

For CNES, the collaboration aligns with its strategy to support emerging space companies. For Skynopy, it provides access to technical expertise and regulatory support that can speed up growth.

Both sides indicate that the partnership could continue to evolve as the company expands its global footprint.
