Rising Health Concerns And Distrust Drive Shift To Home Filtration
LAS VEGAS — Confidence in U.S. tap water is slipping, according to new survey data that shows a growing number of consumers turning to home filtration systems amid concerns over contaminants, safety and long-term health risks.
The survey, conducted among more than 700 water filter owners, points to a clear trend. Americans are not just questioning water quality — they are actively changing how they consume it.
More than 64% of respondents said concerns about water quality directly influenced their decision to install a filtration system. For many, the issue is no longer about taste or convenience. Instead, it centers on what may be present in the water itself.

Chemical Exposure Tops List Of Concerns
Consumers ranked PFAS — often referred to as “forever chemicals” — as their top concern. Heavy metals, bacteria and microplastics followed closely behind.
That shift reflects wider national attention on water contamination. In recent years, reports of aging infrastructure and emerging pollutants have fueled public debate. As a result, household awareness has increased.
The survey suggests that concern is now translating into action. Consumers are moving from passive concern to active prevention.

Health Concerns Reshape Daily Habits
Health remains the primary driver behind this behavior. More than 92% of respondents said health concerns influenced their decision to filter their water.
At the same time, many participants reported perceived improvements. Nearly 70% said they felt better after switching to filtered water, while 96% said they felt more confident in their water quality.
However, researchers note that these responses reflect perception rather than confirmed medical outcomes.
Still, behavior changes are clear. About 62% of respondents said they now drink more water than before. That shift suggests that confidence in water quality plays a direct role in daily hydration habits.
Bottled Water Declines As Filters Rise
The data also highlights a sharp decline in bottled water use. More than 85% of respondents said they stopped buying bottled water after installing a filtration system.
In addition, nearly three-quarters said they now carry filtered water when leaving home. This indicates a broader lifestyle shift, not just a one-time purchase decision.
That change may also have environmental implications. Reduced reliance on single-use plastic aligns with growing consumer interest in sustainability.
Cost And Convenience Influence Decisions
Beyond health, cost savings are emerging as a key factor. Many respondents reported spending less on beverages each week.
Roughly one in five said they save at least $10 weekly, while others reported savings of $20 or more. A smaller group reported savings exceeding $50 per week.
Those savings, combined with convenience, appear to reinforce long-term adoption of filtration systems.
Trust Gap Widens In Public Water Systems
Perhaps the most significant finding is the growing trust gap. Nearly 39% of respondents said they face challenges accessing clean or reliable water.
These concerns range from infrastructure issues to uncertainty about local water standards. While public systems remain regulated, perception appears to be shifting.
At the same time, satisfaction with home filtration remains high. About 90% of respondents rated their systems positively, and more than 80% reported improved taste.
Long-Term Shift In Consumer Behavior
Taken together, the findings point to a broader shift in consumer behavior. Water quality is no longer an afterthought. Instead, it has become a daily concern tied to health, cost and environmental impact.
Industry observers say this trend is likely to continue. As awareness grows, demand for home-based solutions is expected to rise.
For now, the message from consumers is clear. Trust in tap water is no longer guaranteed — and more households are taking control of their own supply.
