LAS VEGAS — A Las Vegas high school student who has dedicated hundreds of hours to serving his community has earned one of the highest honors presented by the Young Men’s Service League (YMSL).
Haydn Rodrigues, a rising senior at West Career & Technical Academy, has been named the organization’s inaugural National Young Man of the Year. The award celebrates YMSL’s 25th anniversary and recognizes one young man nationwide who demonstrates exceptional leadership, integrity, humility and a lasting commitment to community service.
The honor highlights Rodrigues’ remarkable volunteer efforts and the positive impact he continues to make throughout Southern Nevada.
A passion for serving others
Rodrigues has spent years giving back to his community through several meaningful projects.
Among his most significant accomplishments is launching a diabetes and obesity awareness initiative focused on helping people lead healthier lives. Through educational podcasts, research collaborations and healthy cooking seminars, the program has reached more than one million people during the past three years.
His commitment to improving public health reflects a desire to educate others while encouraging healthier lifestyles.
Making a difference one person at a time
Rodrigues also volunteers with the Miracle League of Las Vegas, an organization that provides baseball opportunities for children and adults with physical and cognitive disabilities.
After one young participant asked him to return as a volunteer, Rodrigues realized the importance of building lasting relationships through service. That experience inspired him to become a season supervisor, allowing him to mentor volunteers while creating memorable experiences for players and their families.
His story demonstrates how a single interaction can inspire years of continued service.
Giving back through healthcare
Outside of YMSL, Rodrigues has contributed more than 950 volunteer hours at Sunrise Children’s Hospital.
There, he mentors new volunteers, supports patients and their families and helps students interested in healthcare careers gain valuable experience.
His work inside the hospital has strengthened his leadership skills while allowing him to support families during some of their most difficult moments.
Those experiences have also reinforced his commitment to serving others with compassion and consistency.
Leadership beyond volunteer hours
The Young Men’s Service League combines community service with leadership development by bringing together mothers and their high school sons.
Each member completes at least 20 volunteer hours annually while participating in monthly leadership meetings and serving local nonprofit organizations.
The Las Vegas chapter currently partners with 24 charitable organizations, including Miracle League of Las Vegas, Ronald McDonald House, Catholic Charities, The Just One Project, Children’s Discovery Museum, F.E.A.T. of Southern Nevada and Spread the Word Nevada.
Members also develop communication, teamwork and leadership skills through presentations, committee work and community projects.
A recognition that reflects years of commitment
Rodrigues said the organization has helped shape both his character and his future.
He credits YMSL with teaching him that consistent service benefits not only those receiving help but also the volunteers themselves.
Las Vegas Chapter President Suzette Miranda praised Rodrigues for demonstrating the qualities the organization hopes to develop in every member.
She believes his national recognition will encourage more families to embrace volunteerism and discover the lifelong value of community service.
As YMSL celebrates its 25th anniversary, Rodrigues’ achievement serves as a powerful reminder that leadership often begins with simply showing up, giving back and making a difference one person at a time.
