LAS VEGAS — Southern Nevada seniors struggling with past-due utility bills will have several opportunities to receive financial help this August.
United Way of Southern Nevada is partnering with NV Energy to host its annual Project REACH Senior Expos. The events will bring utility assistance and community resources directly to eligible residents.
Four expos will take place across the Las Vegas Valley between Aug. 18 and Aug. 27.
Financial help for past-due bills
Project REACH assists Southern Nevada seniors age 62 and older who have overdue utility bills.
Eligible residents may receive up to $300 toward past-due electricity, water, trash, propane or sewer bills.
In addition, Southwest Gas customers may qualify for up to $400 through the company’s Energy Share program.
However, each program has separate eligibility requirements. Approval for one program does not guarantee approval for another.
Representatives from NV Energy and Southwest Gas will attend the expos. Therefore, seniors can receive help with the application process while attending.
Bringing assistance directly to seniors
United Way of Southern Nevada President and CEO Samuel Rudd said many seniors live on fixed incomes. As a result, an unexpected expense can quickly create financial stress.
Project REACH aims to make assistance easier to access while also connecting seniors with other useful community programs.
NV Energy Executive Vice President Tony Sanchez said keeping energy affordable remains a priority for the company. He also noted that NV Energy offers programs, rebates and tools that can help customers lower monthly energy costs.
Four August events planned
The first Project REACH Senior Expo will take place Aug. 18 at the Rio Convention Center. The event runs from 8 a.m. until noon.
Next, the program moves to Aliante Hotel & Casino on Aug. 20. Hours are also 8 a.m. to noon.
Two additional expos will take place at Sam’s Town Hotel & Gambling Hall. Those events are scheduled for Aug. 25 and Aug. 27 from 8 a.m. until noon.
What seniors should bring
Applicants should arrive prepared with the documents needed to determine eligibility.
Seniors should bring a Nevada driver’s license or Nevada state identification card. They must also provide a current past-due utility bill.
Importantly, the address on the identification must match the address listed on the utility bill.
Applicants should also bring proof of recent income or pending income.
Help remains available year-round
Seniors who cannot attend an August expo can still seek help.
Project REACH provides year-round assistance to eligible Southern Nevada seniors. United Way of Southern Nevada also provides information about income limits and required documents online.
The August expos offer another way to connect residents directly with organizations that can help.
For seniors facing rising household expenses, even a few hundred dollars can make a meaningful difference. Project REACH provides that support while helping residents learn about additional resources available throughout Southern Nevada.
