On a sunny Tuesday afternoon in Henderson, I sat down with Beth Flory, CEO of S.A.F.E. House, inside the organization’s offices—a place rooted in both urgency and hope. Outside, life moved at its usual pace. Inside, the conversation centered on something far more critical: protecting and empowering survivors of domestic violence in Southern Nevada.
But this time, the conversation came with an unexpected twist—pickleball.

A Different Kind of Fundraiser
S.A.F.E. House is preparing to host its first-ever pickleball tournament, “Dink for a Difference,” a community-driven event designed to bring people together for more than just sport.
“We wanted to create something the entire community could participate in,” Flory explained. “Not just another event—but something meaningful, something that brings people together.”
That vision is at the heart of the tournament, which will take place in Henderson and is open to players of all skill levels. Whether a seasoned competitor or someone picking up a paddle for the first time, participants will share the same goal: supporting survivors.
Unlike traditional fundraising galas or formal events, “Dink for a Difference” leans into accessibility and energy. It’s designed to feel welcoming, engaging, and—most importantly—inclusive.
“This is about camaraderie,” Flory said. “An afternoon of fun, connection, and purpose.”

More Than a Game
While the tournament promises lighthearted competition, its impact runs deep. Funds raised will go directly toward supporting S.A.F.E. House’s operations—services that, for many survivors, can mean the difference between danger and safety.
Those services include emergency shelter, housing assistance, counseling, advocacy, and community outreach. Over the years, S.A.F.E. House has grown into one of the region’s most trusted resources for individuals and families escaping domestic violence.
What began decades ago as a grassroots effort has evolved into a comprehensive support system. Originally founded with just a handful of beds, the organization has expanded significantly—now offering more than 60 beds to those in need.
That growth reflects both the organization’s commitment and the ongoing demand for its services.
Raising Awareness, Building Community
Events like “Dink for a Difference” serve a dual purpose: raising critical funds and increasing awareness.
“Community involvement is everything,” Flory emphasized. “It helps spread awareness throughout the year—not just during the event.”
Domestic violence remains a persistent issue across Southern Nevada, often hidden behind closed doors. By bringing the conversation into a public, community-centered space, S.A.F.E. House hopes to break down stigma and encourage open dialogue.
“This isn’t just about fundraising,” Flory said. “It’s about making sure people understand the resources available and the importance of supporting one another.”
That sense of shared responsibility is what makes events like this so powerful. They transform awareness into action and participation into impact.

Strength in Connection
Beyond awareness, community events play a crucial role in strengthening local support systems.
“Community engagement is priceless,” Flory noted. “It’s what keeps organizations like ours going.”
In a region as dynamic and fast-growing as Southern Nevada, maintaining strong connections between residents and support services is essential. Events like this create those connections in a way that feels organic and accessible.
They also offer a reminder: anyone can play a role in supporting survivors—whether by participating, donating, or simply spreading the word.
A Mission That Continues to Grow
Since its founding in the mid-1990s, S.A.F.E. House has continually evolved to meet the needs of the community. What started as a small shelter has grown into a full-service organization providing care to tens of thousands of individuals.
Today, its reach extends far beyond emergency housing. Through counseling, advocacy, and education, the organization works to address not only immediate safety needs but also long-term healing and stability.
That holistic approach is critical.
Survivors of domestic violence often face complex challenges—emotional, financial, and psychological. Providing a continuum of care ensures they have the resources needed to rebuild their lives.
An Open Invitation
As “Dink for a Difference” approaches, Flory hopes the community will embrace the opportunity to get involved.
For those unable to attend, there are still ways to contribute—volunteering, donating, or simply raising awareness about the organization’s mission.
“Local outreach is so important to us,” she said. “It’s how we continue to grow and serve more people.”
And for those who may be silently struggling, unsure of where to turn, Flory offered a message that was both simple and urgent:
“Call our crisis hotline.” 📞 24-Hour Crisis Hotline: (702) 564-3227
It’s a lifeline that has helped countless individuals take their first step toward safety.

Looking Ahead
Back at the Henderson office, the conversation circled back to the tournament. On the surface, it’s a few hours of pickleball—games, laughter, and friendly competition.
But beneath that surface lies something much more significant.
It’s a chance to bring a community together.
A chance to support survivors.
And a chance to turn awareness into action.
Because sometimes, the most powerful movements don’t start with grand gestures—they start with something as simple as showing up.
And on May 3, S.A.F.E. House is inviting Southern Nevada to do exactly that.
