Historic opening day delivers celebration, culture and a winning start for Mexico
MEXICO CITY — The world’s biggest sporting event officially began Thursday as the FIFA World Cup 2026 kicked off in Mexico City before a global audience of millions.
Fans packed the legendary Estadio Azteca, now known as Mexico City Stadium for FIFA events, as Mexico hosted South Africa in the opening match of the tournament. The historic venue became the first stadium in history to host matches at three different FIFA World Cups after previously serving as a centerpiece of the 1970 and 1986 tournaments.

This year’s tournament features 48 nations and 104 matches spread across host cities in Mexico, the United States and Canada.

Mexico delivers on opening day
Mexico gave its supporters plenty to celebrate.
Playing before a packed home crowd, El Tri defeated South Africa 2-0 to claim the first victory of the tournament. Julián Quiñones scored the first goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup before Raúl Jiménez added a second-half goal to secure the win.
The result gave Mexico an early advantage in Group A and continued the excitement inside a stadium filled with more than 80,000 supporters.
Fans celebrated throughout the evening as chants echoed around the historic venue.
