LAS VEGAS — Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. Yet only about 3% of eligible donors give blood each year. That reality highlights why community blood drives like the one held July 7 at South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa remain so important.
Just Now News attended the Vitalant community blood drive at South Point and had the opportunity to speak with Nicole Schultz, Vitalant Communications Manager about the ongoing need for blood donations and the impact local donors have on patients throughout Nevada.
The event brought together community members willing to donate blood and help ensure hospitals maintain a safe and reliable blood supply. South Point once again partnered with Vitalant to host the drive, demonstrating its continued commitment to supporting Southern Nevada communities.
Blood donations support patients every day
Vitalant has served as Nevada’s blood provider for more than 70 years and currently partners with nearly 50 hospitals across the state.
According to Vitalant, one blood donation can help two or more patients in need. Furthermore, hospitals rely on blood donations every day to treat trauma victims, surgery patients, cancer patients and mothers experiencing complications during childbirth.
During the interview, Schultz emphasized that blood needs never stop, even during holiday periods when donations often decline.
“Patients’ blood needs don’t take a vacation,” she explained.
The timing of the South Point drive came shortly after the July Fourth holiday, a period when blood donations frequently decrease because many people are traveling or spending time away from work and school.
However, medical emergencies continue regardless of the season.
Childbirth highlights the need for blood donors
One statistic shared during the conversation stood out.
Approximately one out of every 83 women requires a blood transfusion during childbirth.
While many people associate blood donations with accident victims or emergency surgeries, childbirth remains one of the many situations where donated blood can save lives.
Complications during delivery can develop quickly. Therefore, hospitals must maintain adequate blood supplies to respond immediately when emergencies occur.
As a result, every donation contributes to protecting mothers and newborns during some of life’s most important moments.
Donated blood supports patients facing cancer treatments, chronic illnesses and unexpected medical crises.
South Point continues community partnership
South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa provided the venue for the July 7 blood drive and encouraged participation through donor rewards.
Individuals who donated received a complimentary breakfast or lunch buffet voucher for the Garden Buffet. In addition, South Point Slot Club members earned bonus points for participating.
The partnership between South Point and Vitalant reflects how businesses can play a meaningful role in supporting public health initiatives.
Community blood drives require accessible locations, volunteer support and public awareness. Consequently, partnerships with local organizations help make these lifesaving events possible.
The drive took place in the Brunswick Room at South Point and welcomed donors throughout the day.
Every donation can make a difference
Nicole stressed that most people are eligible to donate blood, yet participation remains relatively low.
At the same time, demand remains constant.
Every day, hospitals depend on volunteer donors to meet the needs of patients across Nevada and the nation. Because blood cannot be manufactured, donations from community members remain the only source available.
Vitalant serves approximately 900 hospitals nationwide, including nearly 50 throughout Nevada.
That reach demonstrates the tremendous impact a single donor can have.
For many patients, a blood transfusion is not simply helpful. It is lifesaving.
Events like the South Point blood drive remind residents that a simple donation can support neighbors, friends and family members when they need it most.
Blood donations remain one of the simplest and most powerful ways to save lives in local communities. Whether helping trauma victims, cancer patients, surgical patients or mothers facing childbirth complications, every donation can make a difference.
