LAS VEGAS — United Way of Southern Nevada brought together educators, nonprofit leaders, policymakers and community advocates on June 24 for its Early Childhood Education & Literacy Community Conversation at the College of Southern Nevada’s North Las Vegas campus.
The event created a space for meaningful discussions about childcare, literacy, school readiness and educational opportunities for young children across Southern Nevada. Participants shared ideas, explored challenges and identified solutions that can help improve outcomes for families and students throughout the region.
The morning began with networking and breakfast before attendees heard opening remarks from United Way of Southern Nevada leadership. Organizers emphasized the importance of collaboration as communities work to strengthen early childhood education systems.

Community leaders tackle key education challenges
Throughout the event, panel discussions and breakout sessions focused on several pressing issues facing children and families.
Participants discussed ways to strengthen systems that support young children. They also explored strategies to expand childcare options in growing urban communities. Additionally, conversations examined the role of Universal Pre-K and how early learning programs can improve school readiness.
These discussions encouraged attendees to share perspectives from education, government, nonprofit and community sectors.
As a result, participants gained a broader understanding of both the challenges and opportunities affecting early childhood education in Southern Nevada.

Diverse voices drive meaningful conversations
The event featured an impressive group of experts and community leaders.
Representatives from United Way of Southern Nevada joined leaders from Teach For America, Children’s Advocacy Alliance, The Children’s Cabinet, Spread the Word Nevada, Vegas PBS, YMCA of Southern Nevada and St. Jude’s Ranch for Children.
Meanwhile, childcare providers, preschool directors and education specialists contributed firsthand insights from classrooms and learning centers throughout the valley.
Higher education leaders also participated in the discussions. Experts from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the University of Nevada, Reno shared research, policy perspectives and recommendations designed to improve educational outcomes.
Attendees discussed how stronger partnerships can help address literacy gaps and create more effective support systems for children and families.

Collaboration remains the focus
A recurring theme throughout the event centered on collaboration.
Many speakers emphasized that improving early childhood education requires cooperation among schools, nonprofits, government agencies and community organizations.
Participants noted that no single organization can solve these challenges alone. Instead, long-term success depends on partnerships that bring together resources, expertise and shared goals.
Consequently, many attendees expressed optimism about the opportunities created through greater coordination across Southern Nevada’s education community.
The conversations also highlighted the growing recognition that early childhood education serves as the foundation for future academic achievement and long-term success.

Looking ahead to fall 2026
The event concluded with a fireside chat featuring United Way of Southern Nevada President and CEO Samuel Rudd and Dr. Gard Jameson of UNLV.
Their discussion focused on building stronger partnerships and identifying practical steps that can move the community forward.
Organizers plan to use insights gathered during the event to shape the second installment of the Early Childhood Education & Literacy Community Conversation scheduled for fall 2026.
Future discussions will build upon the priorities, ideas and solutions identified during the June gathering.
United Way of Southern Nevada leaders said they remain committed to bringing together community partners who share a common goal of improving opportunities for children and families throughout the region.
For more than 65 years, the organization has worked to address critical community needs while helping Southern Nevada residents build stronger futures.
