Antwerp welcomed international association buyers last week for a special familiarization trip designed to highlight the city’s growing reputation as a destination for conferences, meetings, and large-scale events.
The two-day program, organized by Antwerp Convention Bureau, brought eight international association buyers to the Belgian city for a curated experience centered on gastronomy, sustainability, science, fashion, and culture.
Officials said the visit aimed to demonstrate how Antwerp blends historic charm with modern innovation while offering unique event experiences for international organizations.

MICHELIN Guide Ceremony Highlighted Culinary Reputation
One of the major highlights of the trip was the prestigious MICHELIN Guide Ceremony hosted inside Handelsbeurs, one of Europe’s oldest stock exchange buildings.
The ceremony helped position Antwerp as a growing culinary destination while also showcasing the city’s ability to host large international events inside historic venues.
Organizers said the event connected gastronomy with broader storytelling around Antwerp’s identity and culture.
Because food tourism continues growing globally, many convention bureaus now use culinary experiences as part of destination marketing efforts.

Buyers Explored Sustainability and Innovation
The familiarisation trip also included a behind-the-scenes visit to BlueChem, Belgium’s first incubator focused on sustainable chemistry innovation.
During the visit, delegates met with companies developing environmentally focused technologies tied to fashion and materials science.
One company, Fairbrics, demonstrated how captured carbon dioxide emissions can be transformed into polyester materials.
Another company, Bloom Biotech, showcased textile products created from microalgae.
Officials said the tour highlighted how Antwerp combines its industrial history, chemistry sector, and textile heritage with sustainability-focused innovation.

Fashion and Culture Remain Key Attractions
Delegates also explored Antwerp’s fashion scene during visits to MoMu and a sustainable fashion walking tour connected to the 40th anniversary of the Antwerp Six.
The city has long been recognized internationally for fashion design and creative industries.
Organizers said the familiarisation program intentionally connected those cultural strengths with event planning opportunities for future conferences and meetings.
Because many international organizations now seek destination experiences beyond traditional meeting rooms, convention bureaus increasingly focus on local culture and storytelling.
Buyers Toured Historic Event Venues
The program also featured site visits to several event spaces and hotels across Antwerp.
Delegates toured A Room with a ZOO, Hotel FRANQ, Hilton Antwerp Old Town, Horta Grand Café, and Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp.
The venues ranged from historic buildings and luxury hotels to large event spaces connected to Antwerp’s cultural districts.
Officials said Antwerp’s compact city layout also allows many attractions and venues to remain within walking distance of each other.
Convention Bureau Focuses on Experience-Driven Events
Tadeja Pivc Coudyser said the trip showcased a side of Antwerp that goes beyond traditional venues.
She explained that the city connects meetings and conferences with local expertise, science, culture, gastronomy, and sustainability.
Industry experts say destinations that combine business events with immersive local experiences continue gaining popularity among international associations.
As a result, convention bureaus increasingly market cities through authentic cultural experiences instead of relying only on hotel capacity and meeting space.
Antwerp Continues Expanding Global Meetings Presence
The familiarisation trip forms part of Antwerp Convention Bureau’s ongoing effort to position the city as a leading European destination for international conferences and association meetings.
Officials said the city’s combination of history, innovation, sustainability, and accessibility creates a strong appeal for organizations seeking memorable event experiences.
Because Antwerp continues investing in cultural tourism and modern infrastructure, leaders believe the city will remain competitive within the growing international meetings industry.
