Tadej Pogačar remains in yellow while Stage 9 delivers drama, breakaways, and intense heat across central France
FRANCE — The 2026 Tour de France continued to deliver excitement on Sunday as riders tackled Stage 9, a demanding hilly route through the Massif Central region. Although the stage was shortened because of extreme heat conditions, the action on the road remained intense from start to finish.
The world’s most famous cycling race began on July 4 in Barcelona and will conclude in Paris later this month after 21 stages covering more than 3,300 kilometers. This year’s edition has already produced dramatic climbs, sprint finishes, and several changes among the race leaders.

Stage 9 brings aggressive racing
Sunday’s stage featured a series of attacks from riders hoping to secure a stage victory before the first rest day. Several well-known cyclists joined breakaway groups early in the race, creating a fast and unpredictable contest.
Among the most active riders were Mathieu van der Poel and Tom Pidcock. Both riders launched aggressive moves as the race entered the challenging terrain of central France. Pidcock even collected valuable mountain points before mechanical problems disrupted his attack later in the day.
Meanwhile, soaring temperatures forced organizers to shorten the route. Race officials made the decision after weather warnings were issued in the region. Despite the reduced distance, riders still faced steep climbs and difficult conditions throughout the stage.
Pogačar remains the man to beat
As the race enters its second week, Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar continues to look like the strongest contender for the overall title. The UAE Team Emirates rider reclaimed the yellow jersey earlier in the race with a powerful mountain-stage victory and has maintained control of the General Classification standings.
Pogačar currently leads a talented field that includes Jonas Vingegaard, Isaac del Toro, Remco Evenepoel, and Juan Ayuso. However, several major mountain stages remain ahead, meaning the battle for the yellow jersey is far from over.

Challenges continue across France
This year’s Tour has faced several obstacles beyond the competition itself. Heat waves across southern Europe have affected race planning, while wildfires earlier in the event forced organizers to restrict spectator access near one stage finish. Officials continue to monitor weather conditions closely as the race progresses toward Paris.
The upcoming stages will feature additional mountain climbs, sprint opportunities, and an individual time trial. Therefore, cycling fans can expect more dramatic shifts in the standings before the final riders reach the French capital.
For now, Pogačar remains in yellow, but the Tour de France has a long history of surprises. With nearly two weeks remaining, every second could prove crucial in determining who stands atop the podium in Paris.
